Meridel's claz, Questions and Answers to Derieve part 3 assignment‏

Hi everyone, i think alot of you are really confused abot the 4D assignment... sooooooo.... ive emailed meridel and got her reply, i think it'll help u so so so much... yupz...

From her reply, i would say that

1) Final Project and Final Derieve project are 2 different projs. But u can use Final Derieve project, improve it and be ur Final proj

2) Next week needa hand in proposal of Non-Linear Narrative (Final Derieve Project) and NOT Final Proj

3) Well, i think tt'll mean that next week u need not do a Full Non-linear narrative out still=)

Anymore queries, pls direct it to me or inside the claz blog ( www.g2-ies.blogspot.com) i'll try to clear ur queries asap=)

Hi Tze Weng,

Thank you for your questions. I’m really glad you asked them so quickly after class so we can have enough time to make things clear.

If you could send this to the others that would be great as my computer is still down with the group addresses.

First of all, please don’t worry about the FINAL PROJECT. We will discuss this further into the semester.
There is NO DEADLINE now.

Regarding the Derive Project. We discussed in the last class beginning Part 3 of the Project using Non-linear narrative forms.

Part 1 used the “data” collected on your journey to make a grid of formal relationships.
Part 2 used the same “data” with possible new data to make a linear story from start to finish.
Part 3 allows for a more open ended form. Both Yue Han and Kim Joo started that way and can return to those earlier works to extend, deepen, make better now if they’d like.

We are still using ONLY still images as the main medium. Video and audio are only to be used if you already have the skills and have an idea that merits their use to ADD to the photos. Text and other sources e.g. Maps and drawings are to be used only as “Amplifications” of the photo data collected.

All that’s been assigned for next week is a written proposal for how you would create a non-linear form for your images.

I suggest, if you are still confused about using a Non-narrative structure, then wait. You can, instead, continue to work on your narrative piece for one more week. Many of you still need to any way and were already assigned a continuation or a re-doing.

The 3 parts of the Derive Assignment are exercises to allow you to try different ways of using your “data”.
The end goal is to create an artwork , from your accumulated data over 4 weeks time that has a sense of journey, chance, and exploration of an unknown place. The 3 exercises are just sketches for a more complete work of your choosing. Cheryl could go back to a purely formal ideas using images from Parts 1 and 2 for example. Imagine her sequencing the color patterned slivers between the black white grid images in an appropriate format.

You can choose any of the forms-grid, linear or non-linear narrative -or create a new one to deepen the work, so that by the final critique for the Derive Assignment on October 7th, you can present a work made primarily of photographs, maps, text, and anything else you might find necessary(e.g. The mosquito) sound to create a “Derive”. The photographs are the main source of information.

The point is to stick with the data collected. If you were to choose a new site, I think by now you have a sense that, the data collected has to be extensive.

Your steps should be to:

return to your collected materials thus far
review your first 2 parts, preserve on as digital files for CD
decide what you need to do to make the most complete rendering of this databank
image it with no beginning or end, but like reservoir many parts within an appropriate form

Let your data(research/image bank) guide you.

Good luck,

Meridel

Hi Meridel,

We have some questions on the things to submit for next week

1) First, we need to make clear of 1 thing, that Derieve Assignment3 and Final Project is 2 different deliverable, they are 2 different project, am i right?

2) We need to hand in Derieve Assignment3 and Proposal for Final Project next week?

3) What is the deliverable for Derieve Assignment3?
For the past 2 assignments for Derieve, we produced visual and audio elements to allow audience to get to know/experience the venue that we went to. So for assignment 3, we're supposed to create an experience too? but in time and space? Is our assignment 3 have to be like the stage play of 'reservoir'? what other possible deliverable are there to define "Non-Linear"? The main idea is that we don't know how to define 'Non-linear' narrative.
